In Pic Stevia plant after 1 year.
How To Plant And Take Care
- Check the Soil:
- Ensure the plant is in well-draining soil.
- Adjust the soil pH to slightly acidic to neutral.
- Watering:
- Maintain consistent moisture in the soil.
- Avoid water logging, as stevia prefers well-drained conditions.
- Sunlight:
- Place the plant in a spot with at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily.
- If indoors, position it near a south-facing window.
- Temperature:
- Keep the plant in a warm environment, ideally between 60-80°F (15-27°C).
- Protect it from frost, as stevia is sensitive to cold.
- Pruning:
- Pinch off the tips to encourage bushier growth.
- Regular pruning prevents legginess.
- Harvesting:
- Harvest leaves selectively once the plant has reached a sufficient height.
- Aim for harvesting before the plant flowers for the highest sweetness concentration.
- Drying:
- Hang harvested leaves upside down in a dark, well-ventilated area.
- Once dry, store leaves in an airtight container away from direct sunlight.
- Using the Leaves:
- Crush or powder dried leaves for use as a natural sweetener.
- Keep in mind that stevia is much sweeter than sugar, so use it sparingly.
- Overwintering (for colder climates):
- If in a colder region, consider bringing the potted plant indoors before the first frost.
- Keep it in a sunny location during the winter.
- Pest and Disease Control:
- Monitor for pests such as aphids and spider mites.
- Implement organic pest control methods to avoid chemical residues.
- Fertilization:
- Use a balanced, organic fertilizer during the growing season to support the plant’s health.
